Anaesthesia: Intravenous Fluids

Intravenous fluids are specially designed fluids which are warmed and pumped directly into the patient’s circulation through an intravenous catheter. We do this for a couple of reasons. The first is that anaesthesia tends to cause a decrease in the patient’s blood pressure. By supplementing the patient’s blood volume with these fluids it can be maintained at normal levels throughout the procedure. The second is that, should an anaesthetic emergency occur, the direct access to the circulation allows for immediate countermeasures to be initiated and complications minimized.
