Maintaining oral health is equally important for your pet as it is for humans.
Your veterinarian is also a trained dentist who can diagnose and treat a range of oral health issues. The condition of your pet’s teeth and gums is directly related to the health of the rest of the body.
During the dentistry, each tooth and its supporting structure is individually examined. Any plaque or tartar is removed above and below the gum line, and gingival pockets are cleaned and flushed. The teeth are then polished, and fluoride is applied. For most pets, it is a challenge to stay still while the delicate process of examination and cleaning is carried out. Anesthesia is the best way to ensure a calm and successful dental procedure. The inhalant anesthesia offered is the same used in human medicine and is very safe.
Dental issues in cats include gingivitis (red gums), plaque accumulation, and resorptive lesions (similar to human cavities). More prevalent in cats than dogs, these lesions can become very painful.
Resorptive lesions are a common problem in cats. The tooth resorbs starting as a hole in the enamel like a cavity. It can be quite painful.
