We can provide your pet with any necessary vaccines (required by law) and suggest optimal vaccines based on individual lifestyle, exposure and geography. Vaccines are an important part of protecting your dog against preventable diseases, as well as a preventing transmission to other animals or people. Vaccines are an effective, relatively low-cost option for patients to avoid potentially costly treatments and ensure a healthy, safe and happy pet.

We offer Core Vaccines such as:

• Rabies
• Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (given together in combination)

Other options for vaccinations include:

• Leptospirosis- a risk in Spring and Fall, mostly from drinking out of puddles contaminated with skunk or raccoon urine
• Bordetella- the kennel cough vaccine for dogs in shows, puppy classes, boarding
• Lyme- for dogs with potential tick exposure

What types of vaccinations do you offer for adult dogs?

Core vaccines:

• Rabies
• Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (all given together as a single needle)

Also seasonal Vaccinations

• Late summer to early fall: Leptospirosis
• 1.5 to 3 weeks before kenneling: Bordetella
• Tick season (late spring to fall): Lyme Disease

We also have available a number of other specific vaccinations (Giardia etc.). These vaccines may be required by certain dogs in certain situations. Please let your veterinarian know if you have any special interests such as canoe camping with your dog, or other outdoor sports or travel to exotic climes so that we can better tailor your pet’s vaccine protocol to your needs and lifestyle.

Is there a schedule for how often to vaccinate a dog?

At Centretown, we try to minimize the number of vaccines while maximizing protection against disease. After the initial base of puppy vaccines and a booster a year later, we aim to use vaccines lasting 3 years. Some still remain annual vaccines, please check with your veterinarian as to what your dog requires.

Please note: although the vaccines that Centretown Vet uses are designed to last three years, most vaccinations previously administered to your pet were designed to only last 1 year and will not cover three-year protection. In order for the three-year vaccines to be effective, the dog must have had a basic series and an annual booster initially before the three-year regimen can be used safely.
